Winter Carnival Book Sale today and Saturday

            Join the stampede to the 21st annual Winter Book Sale today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Thomas B. Cantwell Community Room at the library, 109 Main Street . Warm up between Carnival events and enjoy the festive atmosphere of the room decorated for the Adirondack Cowboy theme with pictures colored by many children who have visited the library.

            Besides hundreds of paperback and hardcover books, you will find videocassettes, DVDs, audiocassettes and jigsaw puzzles. A large section of individually-priced books can be found in the Special Books section, including very old and new, coffee table, nature, music, art and cookbooks.

            Jan Kibben, Grace McDonnell and Susan Stiles are serving as chairs, with Joy Harvey in charge of the Special Books. Around 40 volunteers assist with setting up, selling and cleaning up at the sale. Gloria Drucker and Merle Smith did the presorting.

Annual Meeting

            At the SLFL annual meeting held on January 27, Adam Brayshaw and Diane Peterson were elected to five-year terms on the board of trustees, while Donna Fulkerson will complete three years of an unexpired term. Retiring board members Linda Beairsto, Alexandra Dame and Catherine Sutter were thanked for their years of service to the board.

            Library Director Betsy Whitefield reported that 65,208 items circulated in 2009: 42,425 adult books and audio video materials, 15,034 juvenile items, 6,926 interlibrary loan materials and 643 audio downloads. There are 5,658 registered borrowers, with a patron attendance of 73,394 visits.

            The collection includes 35,852 items; 3,245 items were added in 2009.

            The annual report included a letter from the director and board president Gloria Drucker, a summary of financial information, library activities, membership, building and grounds, and the Adirondack Research Room report.

            Volunteers were commended for hundreds of hours contributed to the library. You can request a copy of the annual report at the circulation desk. Board members with continuing appointments are Gloria Drucker, Carol Edmonds, Shirley Morgan, Peter Morrill, Anne Paulson, Joan Tyler and Betty Wadsworth.

Library Lunch Programs

            Ken Campbell will present “High Tunnel Gardening in the Adirondacks ” at noon on Thursday, February 18, while Carrianne Pershyn will talk about “Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Black Bear Project” on March 4. Bring your lunch and have a dessert and beverage provided by the library’s Refreshments Committee.       

Thursday Morning

            Thank you to Michelle Crowley, Jackie Foster and Mary Lawthers for recent programs. Preschoolers are invited to join the fun each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Children’s Room.

Evening Story Hour

            The library and North Country Childcare Network are sponsoring an evening Story Hour Program the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room. On Tuesday, February 16, Terrie Perkins and Barbe Skiff will present stories, poems and songs.

Tween/Teen

            Heather Harrison, Public Services Librarian at Paul Smith’s College, will be offering four Saturday Poetry Writing Workshops, for grades 5 to 7, beginning on February 20, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the SLFL.

            “I’ll have a theme each time,” explained Heather, “to jumpstart our creativity. We’ll do two or three writing activities each week and will share our work. It’s a collaborative and fun environment.” The final session on Saturday, March 13, will be a presentation of poems written in the workshops.

            Participants should call the library to sign up and should bring a notebook or paper and a pen or pencil.

Adult Computer Classes

            The library will be offering two computer classes for people ages 50 and older. Computer Basics will be offered on Wednesday, February 17, 9:00-12:00 a.m. Email and Internet Basics will be given on Wednesday, February 24, 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. Call the library at 891-4190 for more information and to sign up.

Have you seen?

            A Quilting Exhibit of finished and unfinished projects will be on display in the Community Room beginning on February 20.   

            LuAnne Riley’s exhibit of Artist Trading Cards was in the Distin Case through January 23. This was followed by a display honoring Anna Flescher who was recognized as Righteous Among Nations at Yad Vashem in Israel in 2008 for a humanitarian deed during World War II. Anna Flescher was a library patron for many years. January 27 was Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Adirondack Research Room news

            At the annual meeting, Curator Michele Tucker reported that 300 patrons requested materials for research in 2009, while 600 signed the guest book. Newspaper reporters, book authors, high school and college students, residents restoring buildings in Saranac Lake, historians and genealogists all utilized resources from the Adirondack Collection.

            Projects in 2009 included digitizing photographs requested for publication in documentaries, exhibits, books, and various magazines, such as “Adirondack Life.”

Also, the large periodicals were shifted to the old work room, the pamphlet and manuscript collection was enhanced, and a scanner was purchased to provide high-quality photographs

Holiday

            The library will be closed on Monday, February 15, for Presidents’ Day.

Save the Date!

            On Saturday, April 24, the library will present an unusual and fun event--Library Mini Golf. We will turn the library into an amazing miniature golf course for a day. Players of all ages can purchase tickets to play a round throughout the building. The library is seeking business and individual sponsors for each of the 18 holes. This exciting community event will provide financial support for the library.
