Cantwell
Community Room Reception
The public is
cordially invited to celebrate the Grand Reopening of the Thomas
B. Cantwell Community Room and the Centennial Artists Show on
Friday, April 18, from 5 until 7 p.m., at the Saranac Lake Free
Library,
109 Main Street
. A brief program will take place at 5:30 p.m.
Renovation of the
room began in February with electrical work and installation of
data outlets, followed by concrete work for the accessible ramp,
and construction of chair-storage partitions and wood trim
around the art panels. New carpeting, furniture, column
enclosures, display panels and kitchen improvements have also
been added.
As a fund-raising
event for the room, twenty-eight artists donated paintings,
photographs, prints, ceramics, jewelry, fiber art, quilts and
other media that were displayed for a silent auction at the
library in August 2007. The library board has invited the
twenty-eight artists who participated in this very successful
event to display works for the first show in the transformed
room.
The room was
dedicated to Thomas B. Cantwell in 1977. He was a member of the
library board and was president during the planning and
construction of the 1960s addition that included the Community
Room. He died suddenly on February 15, 1977. The board voted
unanimously to name the space the Thomas B. Cantwell Community
Room and to display a commemorative plaque.
Refreshments will
be served at the reception. Please call the library at 891-4190
to indicate you will attend.
